ZOA-Q.pdf - ZOA - Zone of Avoidance - O.K., raise your hand if you ever
thought (in the middle of rush hour traffic, preferably) that piloting a
spaceship would be neat. Lets see.. higher please.. good. I’m glad that I’m
not the only one. I guess that’s because I grew up with Star Trek and Star
Wars; I’ve always been enamored with the concept of space flight and, more
importantly, SPACE COMBAT. I guess it’s the idea of flying around in a
place as big as space that gets to me, but who wouldn’t enjoy piloting a
ship armed to the teeth with guided nuclear missiles, high-tech lasers, and
ultra-sensitive radar? Read on..

This is another of my articles on XTensions. Anybody who has known me for
very long knows how irritated I’ve been with one aspect of Quark’s style
sheets. Here’s the scenario- you receive a text file in MacWrite or MS Word
format. The writer has italicized the names of books, and emboldened other
important words. When you import this file into XPress and apply a style
sheet, all of the italic and bold passages (and anything else with local
formatting) reverts to plain text! Read on..

XStyle review.pdf - Doing Quark in XStyle - XPress Xtension Simplifies and
Speeds Style Sheets. One of the most powerful aspects of today’s page
layout pro- grams is style sheets. Even some word processors have them. A
style sheet lets you define a set of characteristics for text: font, size,
justification, leading, hyphenation specifications, space before and after
paragraphs, and much more. In fact, just about any aspect of text can be
specified in a style sheet. After creating several style sheets—body,
headlines, subheads, by-lines, etc.— they can be applied to paragraphs of
text. Once you’ve created them, style sheets can really speed up your work.

Features. Word Version 5.1a is the latest in a number of recent upgrades
for the Macintosh industry standard word processing program. When Word 5.0
was released recently, the trade press suggested that the upgrade was
probably not worth it’s $129 list price, but it did offer editable
mathematical equations, which are a boon to the technical writer, and the
now necessary built-in drawing module. The former is a version of Design
Science’s MathType 3.11, which is also an industry standard and a very fine
equation editor, while the latter is so fundamental and rudimentary as to
be all but useless except for the most elementary sketches.

Reality’s Wealthbuilder 2.0 by Money Magazine had just been released, I was
eager to check it out. I wasn’t disappointed. Longtime readers of Mac

picks up where those three leave off. Managing Your Money goes beyond the
other two in that it can manage and track investments via a portfolio

as well and perform several other useful functions, but even it pales in
comparison with Wealthbuilder as a full service, long-range financ. manager

several axes - weight, width, optical size, and style. Instead of the
normal set of four or six variations, a multiple master face can be
adjusted by the user to yield an almost infinite number of variations. Read

Virus Paranoia.pdf - Virus Paranoia - Are you protected? You’ve no doubt
heard of computer viruses and Trojan horses. These are programs which can
“infect” your computer and do various sorts of damage, up to and including
erasing the entire contents of your hard drive. It’s natural to be at least
a little para- noid about the subject. You can take some solace in the fact
that there are only 17 known Macintosh viruses, according to a MacWEEK
report, although there have been about 3,000 found in the DOS world.
Further, a number of the Mac viruses are relatively benign, at worst caus-
ing system crashes. Nevertheless, it’s wise to protect yourself. It’s not
only wise, it’s easy, too.

your living room or as complicated as the inside of an automobile engine.
Virtus Corporation is known in the Macintosh world for its professional 3-D

me. Therefore I was interested to hear about a newly released commercial
product called Underware which is designed to re-establish the Macintosh’s
historic dominance in the delightfully amusing and fun category.

master typeface. It is based on the hand lettering of Seattle archi- tect
and prolific author Francis D. K. Ching. Ching’s publications in the field
of building design and drawing are well known, and his lettering style was
already widely emulated in his profession. Adobe chose the name for the
font from the Greek tekton, builder. The company describes the original
font as handsome and functional. I couldn’t agree more, but I would add
quietly stylish, eminently readable, open, inviting, and pleasing to the
eye. I have used Tekton for several years for my Georgia Southern

Doubler is like magic. (White magic, of course.) It was one of the hits of
MacWorld Expo when it was introduced there a short time ago. We understand
that it sold 6,000 copies there on the day it was introduced. Simply
install this extension on your Mac, and you suddenly have twice the RAM
(Random Access Memory) as before. If you had 8MB, you’ll get 16MB. A 5MB
Mac will acts as if it has 10MB. It works. RAM Doubler works by using those
parts of your RAM that aren’t busy doing other things; it uses your Mac’s
memory more efficiently than the Mac does by itself. It’s sort of like
Apple’s Virtual Memory, except that it’s more efficient.

Everyone likes this book. I have read favorable reviews almost everywhere,

like anything Sharon Zardetto Aker, she is thorough, clear, easy to read,
honest, etc., and she has a sense of humor—at least I hope she does. I
infer that she fell out with the Macintosh Bible folks, and I think that
the fourth edition of that book has suffered from her absence. I do not
know previous examples of Wolfson’s writing, but, if he has the good sense
to work with Aker, that is recommendation enough for me. PowerBook
Companion reaffirms my response to Aker’s work. Read more about the review.
